Explain the room constraints before moving furniture. A bed against several walls, fitted storage, heavy drawers or mobility needs can be built into the inspection plan; unsafe lifting and DIY dismantling should not be conditions of asking for help.
Show the room, not just the suspected sign
Take photographs from the doorway and opposite corners, then mark the bed, headboard, bedside furniture, skirting, sockets and blocked edges. State what is fixed, fragile or too heavy to move. A simple sketch with approximate clearances can be more useful than a close-up with no location.
Record insects or spotting separately. The NHS lists bed frames, mattresses, clothing and furniture among places bed bugs can hide, but an inaccessible edge is not proof of activity. Skin marks also cannot replace property evidence.
Keep belongings in the room unless instructed otherwise. Moving drawers, bags or bedding into a lounge may remove the location trail and complicate another resting area. If items must be contained, label their original position.
Agree a staged inspection
Ask which accessible edges can be checked first and what decision follows. A divan touching three walls may still allow inspection of the exposed side, headboard and nearby furniture before anyone decides whether competent help is needed to reposition it.
Confirm who may move the bed, whether the floor and furniture can tolerate it, and how the resident retains essential access. Mention pregnancy, disability, pets, children or another reason the room cannot be emptied.
The report should name areas not seen and explain the effect on confidence. Limited access can lead to another visit, monitoring or assisted movement; it should not be hidden behind an unsupported all-clear.
