Contain fabrics before you move them.
Bag affected clothing before carrying it through the home. Label separate bags for washing and for an agreed freezing or specialist-cleaning method. Make each bag small enough to fit the space available.
Check robes behind doors, stored jumpers, rugs and areas under furniture. Tell us about damage before moving a suspect item into another room.
CARE FOR DELICATE ITEMS
Separate washable textiles from items that need a different route.
Wool and silk
Freezing can be suitable for some delicate textiles. English Heritage recommends sealed bags at −18°C for at least two weeks, then leaving items sealed for 24 hours after removal to limit condensation. Check suitability for fragile or embellished garments first.
Make freezer space manageable
Label bags by method and date. Use small batches that fit without blocking the appliance vents; follow the freezer manufacturer’s guidance. Keep processed and unchecked items separate.
