Property manager inspects roofline bird proofing from a safe balcony doorway beside an unlabeled access plan

Agree who can inspect bird proofing, how each section is reached, what they record and which findings trigger an urgent response. The interval should reflect the installed system, exposure, building work and site history; there is no useful universal timetable.

Start with the installation record

Keep annotated photographs or drawings showing every protected zone, edge, access panel and exclusion. Record the system, installation date, safe access method, cleaning route and areas not covered. Without that baseline, a later inspector cannot tell whether an opening is damage, an intentional maintenance panel or outside the installation.

Routine visual checks can look for sagging, loose fixings, broken strands, open edges, fouling build-up and interference by other contractors. Ground views have limits: hidden fixings and upper surfaces may need planned access. Never climb or approach distressed wildlife to improve a photograph.

Give window cleaners, façade contractors and roof teams a handover before they work nearby. If an access panel must be released, name the person who checks it afterward. A yearly visit will not manage a panel left open after this week’s maintenance.

Define the urgent route

The plan should state who receives reports of a trapped or injured bird, damaged netting or a possible active nest, and how the area is kept undisturbed while advice is obtained. GOV.UK says it is an offence in England intentionally to take, damage or destroy a wild bird’s nest while it is being used or built; some birds have additional protection from disturbance. Maintenance does not override those rules.

If the system repeatedly fails at one edge, review geometry, access and building movement rather than simply repeating a patch. Record the cause where it is known, the repair, the person signing it off and the next inspection point. Do not describe any installation as permanently bird-proof.

Call The City Pest Company on 0203 393 2338 to discuss inspection scope and access for an existing installation. See the pigeon and bird service page for context.

FAQs

How often should netting be inspected?

Set the interval from the system, exposure, access and change history, and inspect after relevant building work or reported damage.

Can cleaners repair a loose section?

Only if they are authorised, competent and the wildlife position is clear. Reporting and isolating the concern may be the correct action.

What should a maintenance photograph show?

An overview with a location label, then the specific edge, fixing or opening. State what could not be seen.
